What Are Springtime Allergies?

The transition into spring brings warmer weather, blooming flowers, and for many people, annoying allergies. Since spring is the primary time of the year for seasonal allergies, you might notice yourself sneezing more often and not feeling the best.

What is Pollen?

Pollen is an airborne allergen that can affect our health. Pollen grains are tiny “seeds” dispersed from flowering plants, trees, grass, and weeds. The amount and type of pollen in the air depends on the season and geographic region.

What it Does to The Body

The job of a healthy immune system is to recognize foreign substances and summon resources, such as white blood cells, to destroy them.  The human body sees pollen as danger when you breathe it in, causing those runny noses, itchy eyes, and many other allergy symptoms.  Exposure to pollen can also trigger asthma attacks and increases hospital admissions for respiratory illness.

When to Seek Medical Attention

Many substances that enter the body are harmless; however, in individuals with allergies, exposure to an allergen causes the immune system to react, sometimes quite violently, which results in a variety of signs and symptoms experienced by the allergic individual.  An urgent care facility can help you identify the cause and deal with the symptoms of allergies that are non-severe and non-life-threatening.  If you are having trouble breathing, go to the nearest emergency room or call 911.
